Industrial generator installations for emergency and standby power must comply with NFPA 110 (Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems), NEC Article 700 (Emergency Systems) or Article 702 (Optional Standby), and local building codes. Healthcare facilities follow NEC Article 517. All installations require permits and must be performed by qualified electrical contractors.
1. Prime power vs standby rating
Standby rating: maximum output for emergency use (typically 200-500 hours per year). Prime power: continuous output for primary power (unlimited hours). Never operate a standby-rated generator as a prime power source — it will fail prematurely.
2. Single-phase vs three-phase
Most industrial facilities require three-phase power. Three-phase generators provide 208V, 480V, or other voltages depending on specification. Verify your facility voltage and phase requirements before specifying.
3. Diesel vs natural gas for industrial
Diesel is preferred for most industrial applications above 100kW due to energy density and fuel storage independence. Natural gas suits facilities with large gas utility service where continuous runtime is needed without refueling.
4. Remote monitoring and paralleling
Industrial generators should include remote monitoring capability (Modbus, SNMP, or proprietary) for integration with building management systems. Paralleling capability allows multiple generator sets to share load for N+1 redundancy.
Pro tip: For industrial standby installations, always request a factory load bank test certificate. This confirms the unit was tested at full rated output before shipment — critical for mission-critical applications where the generator may not run again until an actual emergency.
GeneratorProDirect does not collect sales tax in most US states. On a $5,000 generator, a Texas buyer saves $312. California saves $363.
